Learning on how to use tunnels for vegetable gardens in Graskop Candle making workshop in Masoyi

Brief Description

This programme develops links between specialist resources, organisations and the community within our designated service areas in order to uplift and up-skill our community members. Projects have included fence making, brick making and candle making projects where not only technical skills were developed but also basic business skills.

The following projects are currently running:

  • Sewing project (Glory hill, Graskop): This project was initiated in 2011 and provides a platform for unemployed foster parents to develop their sewing skills and produce handcrafts which can be sold at local tourist shops in Graskop.
  • Candle making (Hillsview, White River): This project was initiated in 2008 and currently run successfully with a developed distribution network as far as Lydenburg. Run in conjunction with Chemcity who provides the basic equipment and training.
  • Candle making (Idonsa, White River): This project was initiated in 2009 and includes eight women from the community. Training was conducted and the women are in the process of establishing a network of sales. Run in conjunction with Chemcity who provides the basic equipment and training.

Objectives

  • To develop skills and create business and employment opportunities for disadvantaged communities
  • To match organisations like Chemcity and other CSI programmes with community members in our designated service areas
  • To assist with the management and maintenance of projects as well as support to the new business owners

Successes:

  • More than 50 individuals and their families have benefited from these projects
  • A number of projects have become self-sustainable for example Vukuzenzele fence making project in Masoyi
  • Partnerships with corporations such as Chemcity allow us to bring specialised skills development to our communities
