Brief Description

Our afterschool care programme consists of the following two components:

  • Feeding scheme: A weekly feeding scheme caters for 60 children and provides a basic meal, fruit and a juice. Each child is also weighed and measured quarterly to monitor their growth and development over time.
  • Educational programme: Two days a week are dedicated to reading, writing, and maths and the children are grouped according to grade and complete activities to help solidify the information they are taught in the classroom. One day per week children engage in dramas, dances, and cultural activities which is often lacking in the national curriculum.
Monitoring of the programme is essential and children who struggle in a particular subject receive one-to-one tutoring or are referred to the school and/or social worker for specialised intervention.

Objectives

  • To create a safe and stimulating environment where children can be engaged in supervised educational and recreational activities
  • To provide children with a single balanced meal
  • To give children an opportunity and access to resources in order to enhance their academic performance
  • To identify children with possible academic difficulties for referral to the school or social worker

Successes:

  • Schools and parents have pledged their support to this programme
  • 8 fulltime volunteers are involved in this daily programme involving 150 children
  • A community garden was established by volunteers to be used in the feeding scheme. In partnership with Chemcity, tunnels were erected for seedlings
  • A network of regular donations secured through the Hazyview Spar in July 2010 ensures the sustainability of this programme
